Recently, Derek has received praise for his groundbreaking work as an interdisciplinary artist. Derek’s work as a conjurer and performance artist has ranged from intimate and conceptual to direct grand-scale public interventions.
Derek continues to explore exciting new landscapes in the realm of magical thinking. Held via LA><ART, #derekshowlive, a magic show performed solely on Twitter, was his latest performance in his ongoing series, The Burden of Secrets.
In October 2011, Derek was featured on the cover of the industry’s leading periodical, MAGIC Magazine, an honor he shares with the likes of Ricky Jay, Penn&Teller, David Copperfield and David Blaine.

Over the years, Derek’s specialized expertise and unique perspective have led him to contribute to a diverse range of film, theatrical, internet, educational and political projects. He has worked with the Christopher Nolan, David Mamet and The Tonight Show, as well as, Bruce Mau and his Massive Change Project to name a few. He is always excited to bring new ideas to a great project.
In 2011, the Conjuring Arts Research Center appointed Derek their Director of Contemporary Conjuring (D.C.C.). Derek is responsible for interpreting new ideas or developments in magic, as well as, the historical relevance of existing work. The D.C.C. is also responsible for creating dialogs between The Conjuring Arts Research Center and entities in fields relevant to the magical arts, such as: Theater, Contemporary Art, Music, Internet, Film and Television.

A.Bandit is an experimental performance art group started by Derek and conceptual artist Glenn Kaino. Formed with the intention of creating a new medium between art and magic, A.Bandit has performed their psycho-spatial interventions at such venues as Soho House Hollywood, Art LA Contemporary, LAXART and The Kitchen in New York.
