Maker of moments
Insists it’s invisible
Rarely deals off the top
A keeper of secrets
Crafty with shadows
Lives in the spaces between
Engineers escape plans
Sees better in the dark
“He is an enigmatic figure in the magic world – extraordinary technical gifts, an encyclopedic knowledge and a way of looking at things from a revolutionary perspective.” – MAGIC MAGAZINE
Derek’s work as a conjurer and performance artist ranges from intimate and conceptual sleight of hand to grand-scale public interventions. He has received critical praise for 184 Seconds, a conceptual magic performance, #derekshowlive, a magic show performed solely on Twitter and, most recently, Nothing To Hide, which debuted at the Geffen Playhouse in November of 2012.
Zachary Pincus-Roth wrote of Derek’s work, “It’s magic as abstract art, reminiscent of composer John Cage.”
In 2012 and 2013, The Academy of Magical Arts named Derek, Close-up Magician of the Year.
As a result of his interdisciplinary practice, the Conjuring Arts Research Center appointed Derek their Director of Contemporary Conjuring.
In early 2014, Derek was selected to be the “Artist in Residence” for Walt Disney Imagineering, where he continues to consult and develop projects.
A.Bandit is an experimental performance art group started by Derek and conceptual artist Glenn Kaino. Formed with the intention of creating a new medium between art and magic, A.Bandit has performed their psycho-spatial interventions at such venues as Soho House Hollywood, Art LA Contemporary, LAXART, The Ball of Artist and The Kitchen in New York.
